Country Quest: Antarctica #180

They use special aircraft to land here, because the landing strip is too short to accommodate regular planes. There are no buildings, just a runway in raw gravel. The nearest medical facility is two hours away - by plane. Welcome to King George Island airport, gateway to Antarctica!

Touching down in this remote location is very special for many reasons. First, it is my seventh and final continent. Second, it is my 180th destination on the Been App list of the world’s 266 countries and territories. Third, it is my 150th country out of 195 UN-recognised nations.

Most importantly, Antarctica is a genuinely cool destination for a globetrotter! I owe the idea of coming here to a Dutch couple I met at Rooiputs Lodge in the Kgalagadi Trans-border Park in Botswana in June of 2023. Having first planted the isea they then told me how to get here. Thank you, guys!

Ahead lies a week of adventure, both onboard the World Explorer expedition ship and on Antarctica’s mainland itself, the windiest, driest, and coldest place on earth.

Watch this space for impressions!
